The Ajuda National Palace tapestry collection, deemed rare outside the Iberian Peninsula, was woven in the manufacture of Santa Barbara from Francisco de Goya, José del Castillo and Guillermo Anglois cartoons. It represents but a part of the set from this source which belonged to the Portuguese Crown assets in the last quarter of the 18th century. The purpose of the conservation project, described in this article was, in general terms, to slow down the inevitable deterioration process of the tapestries, worsened not only by dirt and the degradation state of the whole woven structure but also by the process of fixing the pieces to the walls with nails.
