International Museum Day | Machines for Seeing and Representing the World: the Optical Devices of the National Palace of Ajuda
On this International Museum Day, we invite you to a talk dedicated to two remarkable optical devices from our collection: a late eighteenth-century optical box, which we will be presenting to the public for the first time, and a megalethoscope patented by Carlo Ponti. Through engraved and photographic views of cities and monuments, from Rome to St Petersburg, this activity invites the public to discover historical ways of seeing and imagining the world. Between engraving and photography, between science and entertainment, we will reveal the technical evolution of these viewing devices and invite the public, image by image, to follow their historical development through to the Cosmorama exhibitions in Portugal.
